The first day of the fall season is officially Falls Prevention Awareness Day, but there will be fun and informative events in Cobb throughout the month of September. Injuries from falls are a leading reason county residents visit hospital emergency rooms--about one Cobb resident per hour-- according to the Georgia Department of Public Health staff. Falls are preventable, but the healthcare costs are substantial for Cobb families. The average hospital cost is more than $30,000 for a fall injury, according to the CDC.
Activities will kick off at the "Find Your Balance in Cobb" fitness obstacle course 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Senior Wellness Center, 1150 Powder Springs St., Marietta. There will be information on fall prevention classes, a fitness obstacle course and mini fall assessments available to participants during the fair. This kick off event is free, open to the public and all ages are welcome. Other events planned during Falls Prevention Month include Tai Chi classes, an assistive technology demonstration, vision screenings and an adaptive gardening demonstration with an HGTV host.
